Nokia N900 is now available Stateside as well

Following the official announcement that Nokia N900 starts shipping in Europe last week, Nokia today went ahead and confirmed Nokia N900 availability in the USA starting from today. The N900 is not getting a subsidized deal with some of the major carriers but it will instead be sold independently SIM-free.

As our specs testify, the Nokia N900 comes with full quad-band GSM support and 1700/2100/900 UMTS/HSDPA support no matter what region it's targeted at. So, you should be getting 3G connection with T-Mobile USA, but only EDGE with AT&T.

The Nokia N900 is already shipping to users who pre-ordered the popular device. For the rest of you, Nokia N900 should be available quite soon in New York and Chicago Nokia Flagship stores, nokiausa.com and various independent retailers and e-tailers including Amazon.com for a price around 649 US dollars.

HTC HD2 is now available through Vodafone UK, can be had for free

HTC HD2 is now available in Vodafone UK. You can get one for free on 24 month contract and 35 pounds tariff or on 18 month commitment at 40 pounds tariff. The offers seem similar to iPhone plans through Orange and O2 so we guess Christmas shopping will pose quite some tough choices for the gadget lover.

The monstrous HTC HD2 is now available in the Vodafone UK network and you can have yours for free on either 18 or 24 month contract. A free HD2 applies to the 35 pound monthly tariff and the 24 month contract, while if you opt for the 18 month contract, you'll have to opt for a 40 pound monthly plan.

Truth be told, those offers are similar to the Orange iPhones's, so in the Christmas hype all will be up to the device, not the operator or tariff.

You can see the offers (including exclusive online ones) at the official Vodafone UK website.

Mozilla to award 10 add-on developers with a Nokia N900

The guys over at Mozilla are organizing a contest for Maemo mobile browser add-ons and are willing to award the top 10 developers with a new Nokia N900 each. If you're a developer, you can participate in the contest by submitting your add-on for the mobile Firefox browser for Maemo at the contest homepage.

The Maemo 5 based Nokia N900 started shipping a few days ago but we guess it will be a few days before all stores get theirs. So this challenge is your chance not only to get it for free but also to be among the first N900 owners.

To participate you have to develop an add-on for the mobile Firefox web browser and submit it before December 7, 2009.The judges will choose which TEN addons offer best user experience and innovation.

If you already have developed an add-on for the mobile Firefox, you only have to confirm that you want to take part in the challenge. Well, that is.

For further details on the rules follow that link.

The organizers are ready to supply the participants with all the needed SDK tools as well as with useful tips and personal advices. The deadline is just around the corner so hurry up. The clock is ticking.

Samsung denies speculations of dropping Symbian and WinMo

It seems that the launch of the Bada OS hasn't spelled doom for the Samsung Symbian / WinMo portfolio after all. The company has contacted us and denied the claims made by HMC Investment Securities about Samsung leaving only Android and Bada as their operation systems of choice in the foreseeable future.

Here is what the official statement says:

Samsung has not made any change in its strategy of supporting multiple open operating systems. We believe this strategy continues to provide consumers with a variety of choices of rich mobile content and applications. To provide more choices to meet consumers' many different taste and preference, we will continue our 'multi-OS' strategy.

As an an initial member of Symbian Foundation, Samsung continues to cooperate with Symbian Foundation. Windows Mobile is also an established operating system with solid market position and its own set of strengths. Samsung will continue working closely with Microsoft to provide a range of continually evolving Windows Mobile based smartphones in the coming years.

So obviously Symbian and WinoMo fans have nothing to worry about. One of the major players promises to remain in the game and so we should expect more cool devices to come with the two platforms.

N-Gage is dead, long live the Ovi Store - full of Symbian games

Nokia plans to shut down the N-Gage platform. It's all going down in September 2010 but the publishing of new games has stopped as we speak. The gaming on Nokia phones will continue evolving under the Ovi Store umbrella.

The website of N-Gage along with the N-Gage Arena community will be left running throughout the whole 2010, while the N-Gage store will continue selling games until September 2010. After that the only place to buy S40 or Symbian S60 games will be the Ovi Store, which will come preinstalled on all upcoming Nokia devices. Nokia also promises to bring similar community options for the apps in the Ovi Store.

Of course, all the N-Gage games you've purchased so far will continue to work long after that.

Well, the N-gage platform delivered some of the best mobile games we've seen for Symbian smartphones and we're quite surprised that Nokia is ditching all the development losing a strong differentiating factor. We'll see how it goes, let's hope it is all for the better.

Orange UK launch iPhone 3G/3GS on 10 Nov, same pricing as O2

Orange officially announced that the launch of the iPhone 3G and 3GS will be on 10 November. Their future iPhone plans are absolutely identical to those of O2 ones and you can have the 3GS free for 44 GBP on a 24-month contract.

Much like recently suggested the iPhone 3GS will see daylight in the Orange networks in about a week on 10 November. Back then Orange officials denied that there will be an iPhone price war in the UK with pricing projected to be the same as that of O2 UK.

Well, looking at the new Orange iPhone plans we noticed that they are absolutely identical to the O2 ones - both in bonuses and prices. You can have the iPhone 3G free for 30 pounds on 24 months contract, while the 3GS is free for the 44 pounds plan.

The Orange iPhone will be available through 402 Orange shops in UK, the Orange online shop, Orange HMV concessions, Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and more. For more information on the price plans you can visit Orange iPhone page.

Nokia N97 embraces kinetic scrolling with firmware 20.0

Right as promised Nokia released a major firmware update for the N97 Symbian smartphone. Bringing substantial improvements to user experience and some new applications, firmware version 20.0.019 is already available for download from the company website.

Of course the main change introduced by the new firmware is the system-wide kinetic scrolling. It was already available to some of the other Nokia S60 touch-driven handsets (5530 XpressMusic in particular) but the N97 had to wait good four months to get it.

The Ovi Maps application gets updated to version 3.1, featuring 3D maps, while Nokia email, Ovi Contacts and Ovi Store are all integrated in the core system image. Nokia N97 users that update their handsets also get VoIP support and several nice performance upgrades.

According to Nokia the handset should now have improved memory and battery performance as well as image and video stability.

In addition to improving the user experience, the new firmware should reassure customers (both existing and potential) that Nokia N97 shortcomings aren't forgotten by the company. With the reception of N900 so universally positive and the S60 struggling to match the competition, shifting the effort in another direction (cough!) wasn't completely unthinkable.

Motorola Aura goes Diamond, yours for 3800 euro.

24 October, 2009

The luxury Aura wasn’t luxurious enough for Moto anymore so they decided to upgrade it with 18 carat gold plating and 34 diamonds. There aren’t too many functional changes but than again features is hardly the Aura owner first priority.
The new Diamond Edition may be not so jewelry-thrilled and expensive as the 5500 euro
Motorola Aura Diamoniqe Limited Edition, offering “only” 34 diamonds (instead of 90) and 18 carat gold plating but it will be much easier to pick one.
Thirty of the diamonds of the new Motorola Aura Diamond edition are inlaid around the circular display, while the rest four gems shine on the D-pad.
Motorola Aura Diamond Edition
The specs of the Aura Diamond are the same as the first
Aura. The highlights include quad-band GSM, 2 megapixel camera, 2GB internal storage and mostly a round AMOLED screen with 480 pixels diameter.
The Aura Diamond Edition will be sold at 3800 euro and can be yours starting from 26 October.

Nokia says N900 sales delayed to November

Top cellphone maker Nokia said on Friday its flagship N900 phone will start selling in November, a month later than originally scheduled, as the company awaits feedback from developers.
The N900 – seen as key for Nokia’s future in the high-end of the market – is the company’s first phone running on Linux software. It will come with a touch screen and a slide-out keyboard, and will retail for around 500 euros ($750), excluding subsidies and taxes.

Nokia suing Apple over the infringment of a dozen of patents

Nokia have obviously had some grudges with Apple ever since the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and now they're even going to court. The reason - well, Apple have used some of Nokia's GSM, UMTS and WLAN patented technologies in all of the three generations of the iPhone, but they seem to be refusing to pay any licensing fees.

As far as we understand, the technologies in question are not a trade secret, but rather fundamental GSM, UMTS and WLAN standards, the establishment of which has taken Nokia quite some R&D time and resources. The use of these technologies has been licensed (for a fee) to all other mobile phone manufacturers since making a modern GSM handset is obviously impossible without using some of those standards (as Nokia claim).

So it's either Apple playing naughty here or their R&D department has come up with some exciting new technology that no one knows about.

Sony Ericsson cut down some loss in Q3, but are still way behind

Just as promised, Sony Ericsson revealed their financial report for Q3 2009 today. Things are still looking pretty gloomy for the company, continuing to lose money, but at least the numbers are better this time around (compared to the previous quarter).
The company has managed to ship 14.1 million handsets, which according to the company analysts, accounts for 5% market share. This is a 0.3 million increase over Q2, but still 11.6 million lower than Q3 2008.
The operating income of the company is in fact a loss of 193 million euro. While this by itself is pretty bad it shows sings of improvement over the 274 million euro loss in Q2 2009.
The average selling price of the Sony Ericsson handsets has dropped to 114 euro, from 122 euro in Q2. However this is still higher than the 109 euro ASP recorded in Q3 of 2008.
The hopes of the troubled company for survival depend on the cost-cutting programs started since mid-2008, which should reduce annual operating expenses by 880 million euro. The effect of those programs however will be felt in the second half of 2010.
In shorter terms we expect the market release sales of the
Satio, Aino and Yari to have a positive effect on the company's result for the last quarter of the year. An announcement of the XPERIA X3 would also most probably benefit the profit quite a bit.
